CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

* * *

Jotham’s dreams were terrible, apocalyptic things, where naked, tattooed multitudes marched heads bowed into roaring infernos, as bent crosses whirled like the blades of windmills atop black, gun tower parapets wrapped in thorny vines of climbing barbed wire against a scarlet sky choked with dark clouds of cinder.

Mengele’s secretary was there, one blue eye one brown, naked but for a pair of shiny black surgical gloves, an officer’s cap, and a white lab coat. A black X was scrawled across her breasts which were round and smooth and had no nipples, like a storefront mannequin. She bounced wildly atop the corpse of the Baker, which lay rigid on the metal table within a ring of onlookers; a ring that included Mojz the dwarf, the perpetually apologetic looking Zwi, the Smelter, and Dr. Steiner. All adjusted Mengele’s thermion emitters, angling them towards the ecstatic secretary, calling out encouragement in harsh German as the beams lit up her white flesh and then caused her to burst into flame. The alabaster skin blackened and dripped from her blazing red bones, until it was a red skeleton humping the glowing Baker madly on the surgical table.

And then Mengele himself would enter, and the giggling, cheering little children would run to him, thrusting their hands in his pockets, coming away not with candy, but various colored eyeballs, which they then stuffed into their mouths by the handful as the good doctor laughed and rubbed their heads.

“Good boys. Good boys.”
